Lot of Energy – Very Intelligent – Strong Character
TRUFA arrived in the shelter in March 2025, she had been found wandering the streets in Benissa.
In May she was adopted by an English couple who unfortunately brought her back in October.
They explained that she was a great dog, a good guard dog too, friendly to people, but reactive to other dogs, and as they wanted to be able to take her with them when going out it was in the end not a good match.
Trufa is now during the day in the outside kennel with one of our other big dogs Thor and that works out fine. She does have a lot of energy so we are really looking for somebody who likes to hike or go on large walks, and who has time to train her.
She would be an ideal police dog, she is very intelligent and needs to be mentally challenged through for example search work, agility etc.

Very Sweet – Timid at First – Likes to Walk
LILY was found in the dogpark in Moraira. She had been running on the street and luckily the the door to the park was open.
She was very timid and extremely thin. The first day she stayed in the corner of her kennel, shivering…But then we put her together with our very social big boy Alfred, and it was a match! Slowly her tail went up and after a couple of hours she started to play!
Going out on a harness was also very scary, but after 3 times she found out that it was actually quite nice to be able to sniff in the woods!
Lily has a nice sweet character. She is interested in what is going on in the woods so her hunting instinct is definitely there.
She likes other dogs and likes cuddles once she knows you. She is not very keen on men, especially in the beginning. She will have to build that trust again…

Strong – Good Character- Good with Children and Cats
MAYA had been in the shelter when she was only a puppy.
Her mother is a mixed staffie and her father a very big Saint Bernard.
She was adopted quite quickly by a family with (older) children, 2 other dogs and 2 cats.
Maya was fine with everybody but all of a sudden more then a year later there was a fight between her and one of their other dogs, so she had to come back to the shelter.
We have noticed that she is very friendly to people, she has a good character, but she is also quite strong on the lead, so we are looking for a new family who have experience with big dogs weighing over 35kg.
She can be placed with children and cats but we think that it would be preferable that she is the only dog in the household due to what happened.

Lovely but Strong Character – Loves People
TURTLE was hit by a car in June, she had 3 broken legs.
A long recovery followed in a very good foster home. 2 legs healed fine, the 3rd leg needed to operated again unfortunately.
She has a great character. We all say that she is just one happy soul. She likes to play, she likes to be with people and she likes other dogs.
She does have a strong character though and will be a big dog, so we are looking for an experienced new owner.

Gentle Boy – Good with People- Nervous at first- Hunter
BOU was surrendered by a Spanish hunter who got diagnosed with cancer. He told us that Bou was a hunter, not that good, but still…
Bou is good with people, he is a very gentle soul. A bit nervous in the beginning, he needs to get to know you first.
His whole life he has lived inside a dog kennel in the campo, apart from on hunting days when he was allowed out.
We are going to show this lovely boy now what real doggie life is. First he got himself a real nice soft bed, and next step will be to go out on a walk with a harness and lead, and to be grouped with other dogs.
Hopefully in no time we will get him adjusted to this new life!

Gentle elderly boy – Loves People
DIMITRIE and Xufa were found early morning at only 100 meters from the shelter.
It was clear that they had been dumped there overnight. It was in the period that the temperature went up to 38 degrees.
It took a little while to gain their confidence but then they were happy to come with us to the shelter. They were both incredibly thirsty, poor dogs.
Dimitrie had a chip, but was not registered in Spain. We found out that the chip was registered in Belgium. The track system there gave us the owners name and phone number but they were of course obsolete because they were 13 years old!
Dimitrie is therefore now available for adoption. He had a tumor but was operated and he is fine now.
He is a big boy, and just wants to be with people. We hope that someone will give this elderly gentle soul a nice home.

KANJI is a very special dog to us… She was nearly beaten to death. The first 24 hours in the hospital were very critical and we were not sure if she would make it. But she did!
She is a real fighter, hence the name Kanji: fighter in Japanese. After a week she was able to come to the shelter where she met little Barley, another Podenco who had just arrived. They fell in love immediately and since then are the best friends ever.
She loves her walks and is quite a hunter! Above all she loves contact with other dogs and…even though we would have thought that she would be very nervous around people, she is not!
She loves to be cuddled. In the beginning she needs a bit of time, especially with men but she quickly melts.
We hope to find a home for her where there are other dogs with whom she can play!

DUKE was in a terrible state when he came to the shelter. He was very thin and needed to have surgery because a lump as big as a tennis ball was hanging from his belly.
Shelter life is not easy for him because he has some returning ear and eye problem, which in a home could be treated far better then in a shelter where there is dust and humidity around at all times. He gets a shower with special shampoo from us once per week which he really enjoys.
Duke loves people and he loves his daily walks. With some of the main volunteers he has created a very special bond. To some dogs he reacts, mostly when they are alfa male, but when he passes other dogs he just wags his tail.
We do think that because of his size it would be better to find a home where there are only older children as he can sometimes get enthusiastic and jumps up.
It would also be best for him to go to somebody with experience in large breads, and who has time to do some training with him.

Beautiful Blue Eyed Girl- Playful & Funny- Great and Easy to Walk
NALA is a beautiful husky. She has the most amazing blue eyes!
She loves to play with her fellow friends Lewis and Thor.
She walks well on the lead and enjoys her daily walks. She is also housetrained.
She does need a bit of training though, especially to learn how to behave in a home environment. Crate training might be useful with her.

OLAF and Knut were found together in the campo. Olaf has a great character, he is a happy dog with good energy.
He is also Knut´s best friend, who is quite nervous and who needs him to help him in life.
Olaf is very easy to walk, he loves to sniff around…When it is playtime they go crazy, they run around and jump and make us all laugh!
We really hope that someone is willing to adopt Knut and Olaf together, they really love each other. They are also both housetrained.

All the volunteers are crazy about them, and everybody wants to take them out for a walk. Bonnie greats us in the morning with all her legs in the air so that the belly rubbing can start! They are so much connected that we are really looking to rehome them together.
Bonnie is not an indoor dog, she prefers to live outside. Clyde does come in the house. A home somewhere in the campo with a large piece of land and a nice covered naya where they can chill out and sleep at night would be ideal.
As they are both big dogs we would not recommend them with small children.

KIARA was surrendered by a person who could no longer take care of her. In fact, he took care of her because his friends who had her since a puppy could not take care of her anymore. So she moved house twice in her first year of life. She has a lovely temperament and has stolen the hearts of many volunteers! She is in the outside run with her friend Lucas during the day, and likes to go for a walk. In the beginning she can be a little bit shy, but ones she knows you she just wants cuddles!
Kiara can be adopted by a family, children are fine, but better if they are a bit older because sometimes she does not know that she is a big girl and can jump onto them… She will be fine with other male dogs in the house but can also go to a home where she will be the only dog.

A Spanish hunter brough us two podenco´s ALFRED and Astrid. They were no longer useful for the hunt. Luckily the man was nice for the dogs and they have no trauma.
Where the hunter said that they were no longer useful for hunting, we noticed that Alfred is a real hunter!! He just loves his walks every day. We give him to strong volunteers because he really follows his nose! We tell our volunteers that it is important that they see the rabbit before he does!
Because of his hunting instinct we are looking for a new home for him with a well fenced garden, and maybe close to forests, which he would love.
Alfred and Astrid have lived their entire life together, they form a great pair and love to play together. If they could be rehomed together that would be great but it is not mandatory.

BUBBLE came to the shelter together with her sister Squeak, they were only puppies back then. Her sister was adopted, but Bubble is still waiting for her forever home.
She is an intelligent girl, she knows the inside out of the routine in the shelter and knows several commands. She has been with us since quite a while now mainly because she does not always sell herself very good. Her stress level in the shelter is very high whereas in a home environment she has proven to be a totally different dog.
She travels well in the car and she loves going to the beach! She will definitely need a cat-free home as she likes to chase cats, so it wouldn’t be ideal for your feline companions.
She does have quite some energy, we therefore think that a sportive family who has time to go for nice hikes and who is willing to invest some time in her to train her would be an excellent match.

FLOCKY has been rescued by his formed owner from a shelter near Barcelona.
Unfortunately due to a degenerative illness she had to give him up which was very sad because she really loves him. He had a very good life with her and knows lots of commands.
He walks well on the lead, even though he is quite strong because of his size. If you correct him the moment he pulls on the lead he listens immediately.
It is really a very good and intelligent boy who can be placed with any family.

Lovely Soul- Blind due to Leishmaniosis- Friendly
LUCAS story is a very sad story. He was found on 25 July 2024 in the forest, left to die. He only weighed 14 kg which is half his weight, he had a broken leg and was totally dehydrated.
We managed to get him back to life, and after some time he weighed 28kg. We found out that he had a high leishmaniosis, for which he was treated. But as he had had a very bad start in life, his immune system was not good which proved to be very difficult to beat the leishmaniosis.
Unfortunately he lost his eye sight because of it. He is also scared to go out of the shelter because he cannot see anything, Fortunately we have some very dedicated volunteers who spent a lot of time with him.
We so much hope that someone is willing to give this lovely dog a new life. Life in the shelter is not easy for a blind dog, he hears all the barking but does not know what it is for and cannot see any body language of the other dogs.
Please come and meet Lucas, he is just a lovely soul.

MERLIN has been at the shelter since 2020. We honestly can’t believe that he has been at the shelter all this time. It is sad as he is such a lovely boy once you have time to get to earn his trust.
Merlin travels well in the car and he also loves the water, so if you have access to a pool, he loves a cheeky dip. He walks well on his lead and he enjoys being out and about.
He would suit a more rural area, though, as the loud noises can scare him, and he has not had a lot of exposure to this. So a home with a big garden or close to somewhere quiet where he can enjoy his walks would be perfect.
He is good with female dogs and with some male dogs. An important detail: Merlin knows how to climb over 2.20m fences! So a very well fenced garden is a must!

Elderly Lady – Enjoys Attention- Needs Quiet Home
SURI’s story is a sad story. During all her 10 years she has lived in a plot on a chain attached to a tree.
Her former owner was not really interested in her. She never went out for walks nor was allowed in the house. When someone asked us for help we asked the owner if he was willing to surrender her, to which he agreed in the end. She was in a state…!
We first took her to the groomer who took kilos of hair off her and clipped her nails which were so long so she could hardly walk. Since then Suri has gotten used to the routine in the shelter and goes for small walks with our volunteers.
She has a problem with her left knee, surgery is unfortunately not recommendable because the outcome is very uncertain. We hope to find someone who is willing to give this elderly lady a couple of nice last years of life, so that she can also experience how it feels like to be loved.

YOGI has lived 6 years with his lady owner who then moved back to the UK and surrendered him as she could not take him with her.
In the beginning it was so sad to see him struggle to not being in his beloved home anymore. Now, a couple of months later he has adjusted to the routine of the shelter, but he still gets quite stressed with all the dogs and noise around him.
He loves his walks and has stolen the hearts of many volunteers with his beautiful eyes. When he connects with you, he is very affectionate. He just wants to be at home and have his tummy rubbed.
We have noticed that Yogi is a bit more wary of men, that is probably because he had lived his whole life with a lady.
For Yogi we are looking for a home where is he the only dog, it needs to be a cat-free home as he is not so good with feline companions.

TOM and Backy were brought in by a hunter who had gone blind. Where Backy was very playful, Tom was more reserved. He was a bit more shy and needed some time to adjust. Even though he is fine with females he prefers just to be on his own.

Handsome Charming Boy – Needs Patience and Time
THOR is still a young boy. He was found abandoned, attached with a rope to an electricity pole. He was extremely scared. It took days before he even dared to leave his night kennel and go into the day kennels outside.
After a couple of months he has slowly started to come out of his shell, and we begin to see his real personality now. He is going for walks now with people he knows.
He is charming, timid, but he does like people once he knows you and will warm up; and is good with other dogs and has already had a few girlfriends.
If you like big dogs, he could be a potentially great match for you if you can give patience, get to know him, give him some time and earn his trust.
We see time and time again that once the dogs leave the shelter and can feel safe and secure with some consistency, they blossom and grow into the best companions.

Energetic Family Dog – Beach Boy – Cat free home
ROCKY is such a funny boy. He has the character of a real boxer. He loves to do agility and he loves the water. In the summertime he enjoys to have a play with the water coming out of the water hose or to jump in his pool. He can also jump very high!
There is a lovely volunteer who takes him out of the shelter for a day in the weekend. She takes him to the beach or to the river or goes hiking for hours. He just loves it. Unfortunately she cannot adopt him because she is working long hours and she has 2 cats, and Rocky really does not like cats!
Rocky came to the shelter some time ago, surrendered by an English family who had decided to return to the UK but could not take him with them nor their other dog. Rocky had lived with them for years, they had 2 small children and Rocky was absolutely fine with them.
We are looking for a sportive home for this fellow, because even though is now a senior dog he has still quite a lot of energy!
